March 18, 2011 No. 7/11-BD CDB TO FUND ST. LUCIA REHABILITATION AND REConstruction PROJECT The Government of St. Lucia is to receive a loan equivalent to USD17.960 million from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). This financing is to assist the Government in recovering from the impact of Hurricane Tomas. This is to be achieved through the rehabilitation and reConstruction of critical infrastructure to better than pre-Tomas standards, and the provision of technical assistance in undertaking landslide and flood risk assessments. Hurricane Tomas struck St. Lucia as a Category 1 hurricane on October 30, 2010. The hurricane left significant damage in its wake. CDB assistance to the Government in the aftermath of the hurricane included an Emergency Relief Grant of USD200,000, and an Immediate Response Loan of USD750,000. That financing was approved to assist in providing relief supplies and humanitarian assistance, cleaning and clearing debris, as well as restoring essential services. This new loan is to be used to reduce risks associated with landslide and flood hazards, the major causes of loss during the passage of Hurricane Tomas.
