February 14, 2012 No. 7/12-G CDB SUPPORTS NATIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOP ON CENSUS DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION FOR STATISTICIANS IN GRENADA Twenty-four participants are currently taking part in a two-week training workshop on Census Data Analysis and Interpretation hosted by the Government of Grenada, in collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Participants include statisticians of the Central Statistics Office (CSO) in Grenada, technical staff of the Ministries of Education, Finance, Health, Labour, and Social Development, and staff of the National Insurance Scheme, Royal Grenada Police Force and the Board of Tourism. Overseas participants from Belize, British Virgin Islands, and Cayman Islands (Borrowing Members Countries of CDB) and a representative of the CARICOM Secretariat are also taking advantage of the workshop. The workshop is designed to strengthen the analytical and interpretive skills of staff of the CSO and line ministries in Grenada, to enable them to prepare and document census syntax files, produce clean data files and analyse the associated data using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. In addition, the training is designed to support advocacy efforts at reinforcing the importance of using empirical data to systematically inform the decision-making process in Grenada. A team headed by Mr. Wendell Thomas (SPSS and data analysis expert), and including Mr. Edwin St. Catherine (statistician), and Dr. Beverly Andrews (demographer) was contracted as the team of consultants to provide the training. The workshop is being held over the period February 13 to 24, 2012, at the National Stadium.
