Over the next four months, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has committed to spend over USD649,000 to expand, rehabilitate and upgrade four schools in the parishes of Trelawny and St. Elizabeth in Jamaica. 95 students will benefit from the planned upgrades to the Ulster Spring Basic and Dutch Hill Basic schools in Trewlany which include the provision of additional classrooms, an equipped playing area, a kitchen, a sick bay, an administrative area, sanitary facilities, and sewer and drainage systems. In addition, water sanitation, hygiene and maintenance training will be offered to staff of Ulster Spring Basic, while kitchen staff will benefit from Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point (HACCP) training through collaboration with the Bureau of Standards and the Caribbean Food & Nutrition Institute. At the St. Elizabeth's Austin Primary and Bethlehem All-Age and Infant schools, planned improvements include the erection of perimeter fencing, partitioning classrooms, rehabilitating an abandoned building for use as a library, and the Construction of a sanitation block for the infant department. Approximately 430 students and staff will benefit from the St. Elizabeth projects. Both projects are being implemented by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) through the CDB-funded Community Investment Project (CIP). The CIP targets improvement of infrastructure in education, health, and transportation in selected rural communities throughout Jamaica.
