Children ages 3-5 residing in the New Housing Scheme at No. 77 Village, Corentyne, Berbice now have access to a state-of-the-art nursery school. The USD367,500 facility was built by the Government of Guyana, in partnership with the Caribbean Development Bank's (CDB) Basic Needs Trust Fund Programme's sixth cycle (BNTF 6). Described by Education Minister, Priya Manickchand as the most beautiful and modern nursery school in that part of the country, the No. 77 Nursery School is the 57th such school in Region Six. The school caters to 120 students, six teachers and a head master/mistress. Built to CARICOM standards, the wheelchair accessible single story school is comprised of six classrooms, an open multipurpose space, staffroom, sickbay, kitchen, administration area, sanitary facilities and storage space. The 7,125 sq. ft. ‘turn-key' facility also includes an outdoor play area. The Government's Basic Needs Trust Fund Office is responsible for implementing sub-projects funded by CDB's BNTF Programme. Under the BNTF 6 programme, over USD2.7 million has been spent on the Construction and refurbishment of several education facilities including the Diamond, Ithaca, Beterverwagting, Tuschen, and now the No. 77 nursery schools. Under the seventh cycle of the BNTF Programme USD2.4 million has been allocated for the execution of education sub-projects in Guyana.
